Lifestyle coaching pilot project in Breast Cancer Survivorship – Lifestyle Medicine in Practice
Everyone
East of England
A 12-week pilot program led by Dr. Zainab Wasim, Oncology Specialty Doctor and Lifestyle Medicine Physician, focusing on lifestyle coaching for breast cancer survivorship. The program introduced patients to all six pillars of lifestyle medicine—nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and the power of social connections—through engaging educational sessions designed to empower patients to take an active role in their wellbeing.
Patients reported significant improvements in their diet, activity levels, sleep quality, and stress management from their baseline. More importantly, they left the program with a deeper understanding of how lifestyle changes can reduce their risk of chronic disease and cancer recurrence.
The program concluded with a celebratory lunch where patients cooked nutritious meals from scratch—symbolizing the self-efficacy and inspiration gained throughout the journey. Many expressed how the impact extended beyond themselves, positively influencing their families and even colleagues.
With this encouraging outcome, the breast oncology team hopes to integrate this pilot into a regular, ongoing service to continue supporting patients in their survivorship journey.
